Cuba, August 1994, where a shocking event is currently unfolding. For the first time in 35 years, Cubans are openly revolting against Castro’s regime and, likewise, the government is not stopping anyone from leaving the island. But this time nobody is coming by to pick anyone up. This time there is no boatlift as during the Mariel Crisis. Those who want to flee the country are free to do so, as long as they take to the sea in their inner tubes and contraptions and homemade rafts. Nineteen year-old Clara has decided that, despite the risks involved, she’s leaving her homeland and convinces husband, Rigo, they must both join the exodus. Everything is set for the following morning. The young married couple and two companions plan to depart from the little fishing village of Cojimar, made famous by Ernest Hemingway. That night, however, as Rigo is breaking the news to his family about their impending departure, another shocking event is about to unfold. As Clara awaits her husband’s return, an unexpected visitor appears with news that will drastically impact their plans. Stunned and in disbelief, Clara refuses to accept what is being revealed. She figures the surreal visitation is only the result of fear and uncertainty over the decision to leave Cuba. But Clara will soon change her mind. She will soon accept the news this stranger brings and thus begin an odyssey that will forever alter her life in—LUZ, book i comings and goings—the first testament of her story.

--from FOREWORD REVIEWS A hefty, surprising, and absorbing exploration of faith, both in political and divine redemption. Written with verve and sensitivity, Gonzalez crafts a humorous Cuban tale full of unexpected twists and rich characterizations, and whose surprises reward the suspension of disbelief. While sections devoted to God’s conversations with his son in Heaven provide both levity and space for theological considerations, readers who enjoy the strangeness of this humorous and theological first installment will certainly look forward to future adventures. FOREWORD REVIEWS

--from KIRKUS REVIEWS Gonzalez is a strong, sometimes idiosyncratic prose-stylist particularly adept at capturing the clash of idealism and futility that marks this period of Cuba’s history. Gonzalez’s considerable storytelling prowess is most fully realized in a chapter devoted to the backstories of Rigo and Clara’s father. Here, flashbacks allow the story to move along while capturing the heartbreak of intellectual yearning snuffed out by an oppressive bureaucratic regime.

--from MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW Luz is a highly charged saga of change and spirituality. The result is a striking, captivating, and dense read that unfolds like a flower and blossoms with a predestined heroine whose mother's world collapses and rises again from the fires of destruction, like a phoenix. Readers who appreciate a fine blend of spiritual and social insight, all held together by the glue of a feisty young protagonist surviving a Third World country, will find Luz a gripping, evocative story.

Luz book i comings and goings Troubled Times edition by Luis Gonzalez Literature Fiction eBooks

Luz is a fabulous tale of unlikely miracles, cruel killings, the love of language, and the longing all people have to be free. This is a vivid journey behind the facade of an authoritarian world, into an island country ruled with an iron fist by irrational dictates and haughty police. Set against this backdrop, the fantasy and delight of a second messiah landing on earth is both imaginative and engaging. In Clara we have a curious and skeptical narrator, a heroine who takes us on a tantalizing journey towards freedom even as she is growing into responsibility and a coming-of-age on a grand scale.

The story is lovingly told even while set in a cruel Cuba, and the Christian story of a female Second Coming is not only fascinating but, in the hands of Gonazlez, surprisingly witty. When the Angel Gabriel calls himself the Chief Operating Messenger of heaven, and when God and Jesus get into a long argument about the benefits of modern technology, we're in a cozy literary place of both reverence and humor. I laughed aloud when God tells His Son that one of the reasons He wants a second Messiah is that Jesus has been displaying many Only Child characteristics and He's become quite concerned.

Ultimately this first installment in the Luz series takes us into a world of angels and deities, of a Caribbean revolution and a courageous people, of cruelty and poverty, and of the exhilarating prospects of escape and salvation. We're all left on the edge of our seats at the end of it all, longing to know what happens next.

Luz book i comings and goings Troubled Times edition by Luis Gonzalez Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Luz brings with it a reality that is both heartbreaking and profound while also showing us a glimmer of the divine. Author Luis Gonzalez brings us a story of Cuba in the 1990s. People are starving as their government holds them hostage and forces them into poverty. No one can leave without facing death. Yet in August of 1994 a sudden change of events offers hope to the people wishing to escape. The government is no longer stopping people from leaving Cuba. While it is still a treacherous journey people are now free to attempt it.

One of the main characters, Clara, convinces her husband, Rigo, to make the journey to America with her. Before they are to set sail on a makeshift raft with their two friends, Clara has a vision. Now she must try to make sense of her experience and what it means to her family and her future.

In a book that offers a human and divine aspect to a challenging life we are given hope. In an illuminating manner, Author Luiz Gonzalez, paints a complete picture of the range of human emotions a person experiences at the prospect of leaving family and homeland. We are shown humor and how miracles can and do happen. The characters are strong and the scenes fully alive so as to draw you deep into this story. I highly recommend it!
This story had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There's an abundance of expressive scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.

Luz is set in a turbulent period of Cuban history; it's the summer of 1994 and the people are presented with a brief window of opportunity to escape from its dictator Fidel Castro. Convincing her husband, Rigo, and a couple friends, Clara is all set to flee their small, sleepy fishing village of Cojimar on a raft bound for Miami. However, on the eve of their departure, Clara receives a mysterious visitor that initially bewilders her but in due course convinces her to make a decision that will have far reaching consequences.

This captivating and praiseworthy work had me engaged from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. There are twists and turns in this page turner that will take the reader on a fascinating mystical journey.

I'll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Luis Gonzalez's in the future! For a debut author, this is a very impressive first time out. If you enjoy reading historical fiction entwined with fantasy and mystery this is a book that I think you will truly enjoy. It is an excellent read that should be shared with others, and I'd definitely recommend this book for everyone to read.
"Luz" is the kind of starkly poignant novel that winds around the reader and takes them on a captivating ride of human emotion, life struggles and unexpected journeys that make for an entertaining read. Luis Gonzalez has crafted a compelling novel that explores the reality, struggles and dangers of leaving your home country for a better life. The novel is vivid, refreshingly engaging, has strong dialogue that keeps you coming back for more and utilizes authentic characters to begin unfolding this honest and suspenseful tale. From beginning to end I found myself deeply entrenched in Clara's tale as she found herself with plans to flee Cuba with her husband, but unexpected events send her tumbling into a new and uncertain future.

The author manages to explore the reality of fleeing Cuba and a oppressive regime while creating a captivating mystery plot that keeps the reader eagerly flipping from page to page until the very end. I was tempted to give this a full 5 stars because it really was a very enjoyable read, but occasionally the writing stumbled a bit and the tone was a little muddled before quickly picking back up. So that is the reason why I've gone ahead with 4 stars instead of 5. However, in all honesty even with the minor stumbling in the tone the novel was immensely enjoyable and I would definitely recommend it to readers looking for an engaging and complex novel to get swept up in for a while.
